JPEGmini is an interesting app with a two-pronged approach to shrinking JPEGs. But if you just want a single, simple Mac-based tool, which can handle GIFs, JPEGs and PNG files, then ImageOptim looks like a very sensible choice. You can do better elsewhere with individual tools, then. Our GIF web graphics were reduced in size by 16.2 per cent, PNGs by 17.8 per cent, JPGs by 18.3 per cent. The end results were solid, but not spectacular. The program isn't the fastest tool around, but unless you're giving it thousands of HD JPEGs that's probably not going to be a problem. Drag on a single file, a group, a folder or whatever, and it immediately starts compressing each image and displaying the results. As a result it won't cut file sizes by quite as much as some of the competition, but at least you don't have to worry about any loss in image quality. The program is all about lossless compression – removing comments, colour profiles and so on – rather than re-encoding or reducing the number of colours. ImageOptim is a Mac tool that optimises GIF, JPEG and PNG images by acting as a front end for a host of other applications: PNGOUT, AdvPNG, Pngcrush, extended OptiPNG, JpegOptim, jpegrescan, jpegtran, and Gifsicle. JPEG and GIF compression rates were more standard at 17.7 per cent and 15.9 per cent respectively, but there's still a lot to like about FileOptimizer especially if you can also use it to compress other downloads on your site. Of course it's compression that really matters and here is where FileOptimizer delivers some great results.įor instance, the program shrank our PNG test graphics by 42.2 per cent – the best lossless compression performance in this group. The originals are sent to the Recycle Bin so remain recoverable, for a while at least. This simplicity has a down side as your source files are replaced by the program. In fact, the program has one of the most straightforward interfaces here: drag and drop your images onto FileOptimizer, right-click, choose Optimize and that's it. Surprisingly, though, there's no increase in complexity. Not only can it compress JPG, GIF and PNG images, but it can also work with executable files, archives, Microsoft Office documents, PDF files, and the list goes on. There's no doubting FileOptimizer's ambition. FILEminimizer Pictures program is versatile, configurable and easy to use, though, and if that's more your priority then it may be worth trying the program for yourself. Whether this sort of reduction is enough to justify compromising image quality is another matter. PNG compression rates were nothing special at 26.8 per cent (some lossless tools do better) GIF compression was a more average 16.5 per cent but our JPG web graphics dropped in size by 39.3 per cent, the largest fall in this group. How well does it do? That varied depending on format - at least for our tests. And it's fairly quick, so you're not kept in suspense for very long. ![]() Once you've pointed it to your source files, chosen an output folder, perhaps configured an option or two, one click is enough to begin optimisation. In use, the program follows the usual format. Although, fortunately, you can adjust most of this in the program's settings. By default it may change formats, resize images, re-encode JPEGs with a reduced quality and strip out metadata in an effort to shrink your pictures. FILEminimizer Pictures (opens in new tab)įILEminimizer Pictures takes a more drastic approach to image compression than most of the competition. Clearly most people will be better off elsewhere. But even then the overall size of our images fell by a very feeble 1.2 per cent. Fortunately, you can tell Caesium not to write a file in that case. It can only output 24-bit files, so if you're using anything else then your images will probably grow in size.Īnd the program's results clearly illustrated the problem, with most of our test PNG web graphics actually increasing in size. There's no lossless option it just reencodes the file at your chosen quality setting.Ĭaesium does provide support lossless PNG compression, although this has a major limitation. Click the Add program, choose your images, select an Output folder, click Compress and you'll have your results within seconds.īMP compression isn't of interest to us, and the program's JPG technology isn't anything special, either. ![]() ![]() Caesium is a simple open source tool that helps you to compress PNG, JPG and BMP formats.

Astronauts no gravity1/7/2024 ![]() Yes, this is difficult but it can be accomplished. Since you are at rest, the total force must be zero-that means the downward gravitational force pulling down is balanced by the upward pushing force from the floor. Suppose you are standing in a stationary elevator at the top of a building. You can be weightless by having the gravitational force as the only thing acting on you. In orbit, there is only the gravitational force-leading to that feeling of weightlessness.Īctually, you don't even need to be in orbit to feel weightless. Standing on a tall tower would result in two forces (gravity pulling down and the tower pushing up). If the only force acting on a human is the gravitational force, that human feels weightless. The "weightless" environment is caused by the orbital motion of the people inside a spacecraft or space station. In both of these cases, there is a significant distance between the two interacting objects-but gravity still "works," even in space.īut why do astronauts float around in space? Well, they float around when in orbit-if there was a super tall tower reaching into space, they wouldn't float around. Why does the Earth orbit the Sun? Yup, it's gravity. Why does the moon orbit the Earth? The answer: gravity. But you can see there is clearly gravity in space. This is about 88 percent the value on the surface of the Earth ( you can check all my calculations here). ![]() ![]() Recalculating with this greater distance, I get a weight of 608 Newtons. Now moving up to the orbital height of the International Space Station, you would be an extra 400 km farther from the center. With this value, a person with a mass of 70 kg would have a gravitational force of 686.7 Newtons. Let's use an Earth radius of 6.371 x 10 6 meters. However, if the science could be correct without destroying the plot, then obviously I'd prefer it. If the writer distorts science in order to make the plot move along-so be it. I've talked about this before, so I'll just give a summary: The number one job for a writer of a show is to tell a story. The point is that there is one dude "floating" around in the spacecraft during reentry.īefore I over-analyze this short scene, let me add a caveat about my philosophy on science and stories. OK, that is enough of the description of the scene so that we can talk about physics. Another teenager points out that he's being pretty dumb-and that he's going to get hurt very soon. So what does he do? He gets out of his seat and floats around as a demonstration of his mastery of weightlessness. During the reentry process, one kid wants to show that he is the master of space travel and that he's awesome. For reasons that I won't get into, there is a spacecraft with a bunch of teenagers that is traveling from a space station down to the surface of the Earth. If you haven't seen the show, I'll just point out that it takes place in the near future (though it ran, on the CW, in the near past). MARK VANDE HEI, NASA ASTRONAUT: "Most of us have experienced what it feels like to be on a roller coaster, and that moment when you're strapped down in a roller coaster and it kind of goes at high speed over the top of a bump and you rise up in the seat: That's what it felt like to me.This week, I settled down to watch the first episode of The 100. Every little thing that you take for granted on Earth when all your stuff stays put is a little more challenging in space." You're going to find it a week later, you know, by the duct work or something. "All of the liquid that's in those (food) packets, you know, if you are eating too fast and you get some of that liquid airborne, it's going to go everywhere. The upcoming SpaceX launch includes a billionaire, engineer and professor The first all-civilian spaceflight crew is preparing for take-off And then I go ahead and I rub it in a little bit, just like you would on Earth. "I'm going to go ahead and put some of this no rinse shampoo. How do you wash your hair in zero-gravity?

Widely letterspace capital1/6/2024 ![]() Older serif fonts tend to have taller ascenders and descenders than more modern versions. As you’ll soon see, some fonts have ascenders and descenders that are quite tall relative to the main part of the letterforms, where most of the action occurs. ![]() And there are fonts that are all capitals or all lowercase-remnants of the type drawers that printers used back in the analog age.Ī subtle but important detail to consider in type choices is the proportion of the x-height of the ascenders to the descenders. They can be upright (roman) or slanted and script-like (italic). Fonts can be squished (condensed) or stretched (extended). Serifs are those little extensions at the tops and bottoms of letterforms.įonts often come in sets, or families, with visual weights ranging from spindly (light) to normal (medium or regular) to fat (bold and heavy). With rare exceptions, fonts are either serif or sans serif. Typography for Beginnersīefore looking at specific examples, and without diving too deeply into the obscure parlance of typography, let’s start with a few font basics. Poor font choices can compromise your story’s readability, even for people with 20/20 eyesight. Conversely, a heavy, stern-looking font chosen for a lighthearted tale can send its own kind of mixed messages.Īnd-perhaps more important-all storytellers should feel ethically obligated to make narratives as accessible as possible to all people, including those with visual impairments. A frivolous-looking typeface paired with a serious, issue-driven story can weaken your message and trivialize your narrative. Inappropriate fonts can confuse or contradict your story’s purpose. However, with freedom comes responsibility. The importance of pairing the right type with the right narrative is exactly why Esri expanded the options in the theme builder so dramatically. When they see different typestyles, it elicits only a subliminal reaction.īut the subconscious and subliminal are important to storytelling, especially multimedia storytelling, where images, text, maps, color, type, and even sound can all work together to create an immersive little world. Poor type choices can offend me, but many people are only vaguely aware of typography. I’ve been a designer for close to half a century, so my eye is perhaps more typographically attuned than most. The first choice under the Typography section is Add from Google Fonts. To access Google Fonts for use in a custom theme, in the StoryMaps builder, choose Design > Browse themes > Create new theme and expand the Typography section.

0p metro last light image1/6/2024 ![]() Both the dbcache and dbheap (internal application memory space) have been increased for improved program memory space allocation. The 700p includes 128 MB of non-volitile (NVFS) chip for internal program memory, of which 60 MB is user-available. The device has been given a much needed boost in the memory department. The Treo 700p is powered by a 312 MHz PXA270 Intel XScale processor. It pretty much shares the same dimensions and weight as the Treo 650 and 700w. Size wise, the Treo 700p has dimensions of 5.08" x 2.28" x 0.89" inches (129 x 58 x 22.5 mm) and weighs in at 6.4 ounces (180 g). Fortunately, there is a third party utility that lets you remap the buttons to your own preferences and you can revert to the more efficient 650 style. Often the home key is over-ridden by the games and there is no way to quit out of the current app and you can get stuck. I also ran into trouble with a lot of games and a few apps. it is a little more clumsy to access common functions and menus. This reshuffling of the key navigational array is a disappointment. The menu key has been awkwardly relocated to the bottom of the keyboard next to the infrequently used alt key. The home key is part of the application buttons on the far right and can't be changed by design. The menu key has been moved to the bottom right of the keyboard and gone is the former convenient home and menu key arrangement from the 650. Hitting the blue option key before tapping a button gives you a few more shortcuts which you can also customize. ![]() The row of application buttons below the screen are user changeable and by default take you to the Phone app, Agenda view (calendar) and email. The center 5-way navigator is also a bit larger and is a lot easier to grip and thumb around with. The on-screen keyguard display now has a larger notification bar that now shows the current time and date whenever you activate the device. You simply tap the red button to turn off and it locks the keys. Activating and using the keyguard is nicely implemented and is pretty mostly a transparent process. The red end key also turns the screen off and activates the keyguard. The rectangular green and red buttons are devoted to initiating and ending phone calls. The 700p has two new dedicated send and end call buttons just below the display. The backlighting on the keyboard and buttons has been improved with blue outlines on the app keys and a brighter, more consistent white illumination on the qwerty keypad. My personal thumb typing speed and accuracy feels about the same with both styles. After using it for a few weeks I can't say I either dislike or prefer the new keys. They keys are now angled towards the sides of the device in the usual smile pattern. The keyboard now has a more square thumb keyboard arrangement instead of the rounded oval keys on past treos. The usual Palm powered circular logo, has been replaced with a new ACCESS Powered stamp, reflecting the new owners of PalmSource. On the back of the device is a possible sign of things to come. The main differences between the two units include the operating system (obviously), a higher density 320 x 320 pixel display and a few distinctive icons on the buttons. Curiously, the Verizon version still retains the old behavior of inanely blinking to indicate network status.Īt first glance, the Treo 700p is almost identical to its Windows Mobile counterpart, the Treo 700w. The LED on the Sprint version now only blinks when you have a waiting notification alert such as a missed phone call or voicemail and remains on when charging. On top front of the device above the screen are the LED and phone earpiece. Compared to its successful predecessor, the Treo 650, the 700p has a much darker grey plastic casing with with a more subtle silver finish. The silent mode switch now vibrates when activated, giving you a physical confirmation when engaged. ![]() Most of the improvements to Palm's flagship smartphone come in the form of new software innovations, a big boost in memory and fast, broadband like data speeds.īeginning with the large aerial bulge, the top of the device contains the memory expansion slot, IR window, the famous silent mode switch and the stylus silo. From a visual perspective the design changes are small, evolutionary refinements of a proven smartphone form factor. The Treo 700p combines the benefits of a full featured mobile phone with the Palm OS mobile computing platform. Palm's Treo 700p is the latest in a now long linage of Treo smartphones.

Nhl 21 gameplay1/6/2024 ![]() ![]() There is more focus on building a personal brand, too, which the devs likened to Ovechkin and his player profile - and closely follows superstar modes for other series like FIFA and NBA 2K, both of which have highlighted brand-building for players in recent iterations. I turn skating impact down very low and turn puck carrier speed and agility up a bit, it allows players to try and beat a defender wide like you see in the NHL pretty often, instead of always curling up and becoming a sitting duck. Players will be able to handle things like media scrums while even making requests for additional ice time to their coach, giving them a wider range of options for their season. In the Be A Player mode, players will have more interactivity with coaches, agents, and other players. One example given during the preview session was that players can choose to stay in their hotel to recover or go out with the team for some bonding during the course of a season. We’ve listened to your feedback and have made improvements from the Technical Test to key areas of gameplay. This marks Ovechkin's second appearance after being given the honor on the NHL 07 cover, too. The developers wanted to center the game around him and his individuality, and that is apparent in the many upgrades the game has versus NHL 20. Fanfiction websites1/6/2024 ![]() There’s a reason “author is projecting onto the characters” is such a popular tag on AO3. ![]() For every crude story I have read, I have read just as many good ones.įanfiction also gives people a chance to indirectly process their own hardships. Plus, the volume of available stories means that if one fanfic is not very well written, the reader can easily find another story on the same topic that is better. But all good writers have to start somewhere, and fanfiction gives many people a unique chance to stretch their writing muscles, post anonymously and receive feedback via comments. Yes, the low bar opens the door for a fair amount of stories written by middle schoolers about teen girls being sold to One Direction, and the poor grammar and second-hand embarrassment of these works can be an eyesore for writing veterans. It gives everyday people a platform to be creative, and to share that creativity with other people who love the characters as much as the fanfiction writer does. But this is actually what makes fanfiction so unique. There are no credentials other than creating an account, writing and posting. The problem, in critics’ opinions, is that you don’t have to be a talented writer in order to post fanfiction. I’ve had multiple creative writing friends say that fanfiction is beneath them or ‘not real writing.’ Fanfiction writers are the butt of their jokes. Though fanfiction has amassed a large following online, its reception in the real world tends to be a bit more mixed. Fluff is the term for fanfics that are mostly lighthearted, like first kiss fics or wedding fics. Angst is the term for fanfics that deal with predominantly negative emotional themes, like pain, grief or other hardships. Slow burns are fics where romantic relationships develop gradually over the course of many chapters. ‘Enemies to Lovers’ and ‘Friends to Lovers’ are popular relationship pairings. In this trope, usually one character is cast as a barista and another is cast as a lovestruck customer. Coffee Shop AU’s is another popular example and a staple of the ‘meet-cute’ genre. Unrelated characters, like the Avengers, are cast as Hogwarts students. Hogwarts AU’s are a classic example of this. AO3 in particular is so widely used that it has developed its own terminology and tropes.įor example, AU (alternate universe) is when characters are placed in a different setting than their original one. For example, a Percy Jackson fanfic would say “characters and setting belong to Rick Riordan.” This means the fan can change the original plot as much as they like, including resurrecting dead characters, placing two characters in a romantic relationship or adding additional elements, like giving the main character magic powers.įanfiction is wildly popular among internet communities, and well-known fanfic sharing sites include Wattpad, Archive Of Our Own (AO3) and. In order to obey copyright laws, writers normally post a disclaimer at the beginning of their work. The fanfic’s author has total creative freedom as long as they aren’t trying to profit off of the copyrighted materials. They are typically written by a fan of some creative work, like a book or movie. In simple terms, fanfiction is a story that uses pre-existing fictional characters and settings instead of original characters or settings. On the Internet, fanfiction has given millions of fans a chance to tell their favorite stories differently. But of course, I couldn’t change how the story ended. Why did he have to die! There must have been another way! I thought to myself, a blubbering mess. Not an eye in my family was dry as he said his last words to Maggie, and I must have gone through a whole box of tissues on my own. (Spoiler alert!)
